The Lucerne School of Business is Central Switzerland’s competence centre in the socially and economically relevant fields of business, regional economy, banking and finance, marketing and communication, as well as tourism and mobility.
Are you passionate about using advanced technology to transform healthcare? We seek a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate to join our research team in health data science, focusing on human-centered and explainable health services interfaces. This project aims to develop novel, AI-driven user interfaces for digital health applications that enhance transparency, usability, and engagement. The research will integrate state-of-the-art machine learning techniques with user-centered design principles to ensure explainability and trust in health decision-support systems. The host institution is the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in collaboration with the University of Lucerne (UniLU), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Christian Frederik Baumgartner (UniLU) and PD Dr. Luis Terán (HSLU) within the doctoral program of Health Data Science at the UniLU.
Tasks and job requirements
- Conduct high-quality research at the intersection of AI, health informatics, and human-computer interaction (HCI).
- Design and evaluate interactive health system interfaces that improve transparency and interpretability for SCI health services.
- Investigate user experience (UX) principles to enhance clinicians› trust in AI-based health systems.
- Assess the ethical and regulatory implications of AI-driven decision-making in healthcare settings.
- Conduct empirical studies involving healthcare professionals to validate proposed models and interfaces.
- Publish high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Your profile
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), AI, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- Strong background in AI, machine learning, and/or explainable AI.
- Experience in UI/UX design, HCI, or human-centered AI.
- Strong programming skills and familiarity with modern AI frameworks. Knowledge of XAI frameworks is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including health professionals.
- Creative and able to communicate complex information.
- Fluent in English. German fluency is a significant advantage.
